For sellers with existing 18650 battery inventory in Amazon’s warehouses, this amounted to 30 days to process removal orders before Amazon would destroy those cells.
Why Amazon Banned 18650 Sales
So what happened? Why institute a full ban on one of the most commonly purchased battery form factors?
According to Amazon’s public statement, the ban focused specifically on safety concerns around standalone cylindrical battery cells:
To ensure the safety of our customers, starting August 9, listings for cylindrical Lithium Ion Battery cells, in the sizes listed below, will be removed from Amazon and you will no longer be able to sell these products.
Between the risk of clones, rewraps, overstated capacities, and counterfeits, Amazon decided that any sale of individual cylindrical cells represented too much liability, safety hazard, and brand risk.
And given recent battery fires and explosions, it’s tough to blame them.
However, many sellers felt the ban unfairly punished legitimate vendors while allowing lower quality cells to continue flooding Amazon warehouses under the guise of being sold with flashlights.
The “Flashlight Loophole” Still Allows Some 18650 Batteries Sales
Here’s an interesting quirk of Amazon’s 18650 ban:
While you can’t buy a 18650 battery by itself, you can still purchase 18650 cells bundled with an off-brand flashlight.
In fact, if you search Amazon today for something like “18650 battery pack”, 95% of the first page results show lithium cells shrink-wrapped to a generic zoomie flashlight.
Strangely enough, these “flashlight included” 18650 bundle listings are still fair game per Amazon’s updated battery policy.
The working theory goes that these flashlight + battery combo packs skirt underneath the safety concerns. Since the cells ship pre-installed in a device, it reduces the chances of improper handling or usage.
However, experienced battery buyers report receiving just a cheap light and naked 18650s, without even a basic plastic sleeve for insulation.
So while Amazon still allows bundling a 18650 battery with any random item to bypass their restrictions, it’s hard to see how this makes anything safer.
Where to Safely Buy Genuine 18650 Batteries Now
With Amazon closing the gates on 18650 battery sales, where should you buy cells from if you need to replace a dead laptop battery or pulled cell?

I realize this article may come across as highly critical of Amazon’s ban on selling individual 18650 lithium-ion cells. However, after understanding the full context around counterfeit cells and battery mishandling risks, their updated policies make more sense.
While experienced builders understand proper 18650 usage and risks, average consumers routinely overload these cells or wire them up dangerously inside vape mods or high-drain flashlights.
Proper handling instructions require stating realistic capacity limits under load along with safe charging specs. But unscrupulous sellers rarely share this info.
So from 30,000 feet, Amazon banning the general public from buying standalone cylindrical lithium batteries reduces chances of battery explosions and closely mirrors similar hazmat restrictions around shipping lithium cells.
